Navigating Adventures and Innovation: Shane Brien's journey with TRT
12 August 2024We had a catchup with Shane Brien (Senior Crane Technician), one of our standout crane service professionals at TRT, to hear his thoughts on his job and the company.
Shane reflects, "One of the most exciting aspects of my job at TRT is the travel. I have always had a passion for adventure from a young age. This passion ultimately led me to Brisbane and TRT, and being able to travel for my job is amazing. It breaks up the daily grind and I get to see places I probably wouldn't have gone to and meet people from different cultures, and of course the unexpected experiences..."
He continues, 'From missed flights ending in a banana boat ride to a remote mine site in PNG, to sitting back and watching the sunset in far north QLD or having a coffee on the beaches of New Caledonia before my flight home all add to the sense of adventure."
We asked Shane's thoughts about TRT's culture. "TRT has evolved over the years with various management shifts, as is common in any company. Despite these changes, the company has consistently championed training and development across various manufacturing areas. This has allowed me to develop a range of skills that I've been able to apply to different roles - for example, I'm currently co-managing a workshop in PNG for the ongoing support of a mine site"
Shane continues, "And right now I'm hoping to be booked to go through certification training with one of the manufacturers we deal with, which I didn't think was a possibility or a priority for me - but with TRTs help and support - this is a reality now."
By Shane's own admission upskilling and development as a Senior Crane Field Service Technician has increased his understanding and requirement for structure and processes. These systems ensure work is completed efficiently and correctly. This approach is complemented by an open-door policy, which encourages constructive conversations that benefit the company.
Shane talks about how his role contributes to TRT’s overall success. "Being a point of contact for customers when they are in need offers them a sense of assurance, especially in a time-sensitive emergency. When a crane goes down in a remote location, customers knowing there is someone they can call for help and get immediate support is vital to the success of TRT. Whether the problem is a simple operational error or remote diagnostics issue, I'm just a phone call away, and it's always on ( just don’t call at 2 am and wake the baby!)."
On a personal note, Shane explains how working at TRT has affected him, "TRT has built my resilience to deal with change. It is an everchanging environment and you need to be able to apply this sort of thinking to the outside world, which serves me well".
