RedBull Powder Charges ahead!
25 July 2024RedBull Powder Co (RPC) Pokeno-based drilling division were over the moon to finally take possession of their TRT Quad Axle Fixed Width Low Loader.
RPC specialises in drilling and blasting services in the quarry, mining, and construction industry and was after a transport solution that was very specific to their needs.
Starting their search back in late 2019, the project lost momentum due to the acquisition of another drill company in 2020, closely followed by the Covid years. Fast forward to late 2022, and the project was back on the radar.
The scope included finding a trailer to transport a combination load comprising one of their two large drilling machines plus a utility vehicle. The current three-axle trailers available were restrictive as drilling machines and utes had become heavier over time.
Tristen Bradley, Operations Manager, says, "To make things more complicated, we wanted the option to transport the ute with either of our large drills (Sandvik DP1100i or DX900i), which required different mast supports for transportation. This was achieved with some engineering smarts and a few hours measuring and remeasuring with both Sandvik drills onsite at the TRT head office and manufacturing facility in Hamilton. The design of the trailer had to provide a low tare weight to meet the demands of carrying a Large machine and utility in combination and still be legal on the road. "
Tristen continues, "What set TRT apart was their professionalism and the confidence they had in the ability to deliver a trailer to meet our needs... and it has been well worth the wait!!
The low loader has a rear steer axle, rear hydraulic ramps, and a special headboard position to suit both drilling machines. So when in transit, a drilling machine will be loaded on the trailer with the utility vehicle tucked in under the rear of the machine, in the in-deck drop well (helping to locate the utility vehicle).
This way, the whole unit can be operated by one person - they transport the drill to site, drill the holes, then move onto the next job without any delays.
Glen Harnett, TRT OEM GM adds, "It took 4 years from the first conversation and quote to sign off. The RPC team have been great to work with, and the fact that they were able to bring the machines to TRT to test on the trailer before paint meant we were assured that the units would be loaded in the correct positions as designed, and that the trailer was fit for purpose, and met legal criteria, of course..."
